Wednesday, 8 March

SLSC RopeLab: Hand & Feet Bondage

6:30 p.m. – 9:30 p.m.

Capitol Hill, exact location revealed upon registration

Cost: None

Link: https://seattleleather.org/events-lite/rope-lab

Description:

RopeLab Seattle is a collaborative men’s rope bondage community for experienced rope riggers to workshop and practice rope techniques. This is a space for gay and bisexual men, transmen, and other male-presenting people to participate in ropework peer-learning skillshare.

There is no evaluation/requirement for proof of skill level. If you feel you have the necessary skills to participate, you are encouraged to attend. However, the focus of RopeLab Seattle will always highlight the needs of our community’s advanced riggers: RopeLab Seattle is not the place to learn your first knots, but once you have those down (having learned them at one of many great educational events such as Men Tying Men or a ropes class facilitated by SLSC) you are encouraged and welcome to join RopeLab Seattle.

Each RopeLab begins with a welcome and introduction to the evening’s topic/theme often accompanied by a photo slideshow highlighting a variety of methods or approaches to the theme/topic. Participants are encouraged to dialogue about these approaches and share examples of things they have tried, or want to try. After a short discussion, participants are encouraged to form small groups around specific interests related to the theme and then begin roping. This is very much a collaborative educational learning/workshop space and NOT a play party. Participants are encouraged to wander around the space to see other approaches to the topic/theme and engage in discussion. It is encouraged to swap/rotate your tying partner throughout the event to provide a variety of body types to practice on; however, we understand that some people may not be comfortable with a different tying partner, and that should be respected.

Join your fellow kinksters for this collaborative discussion group on topics covering developing a kink skillset, navigating consent, risk awareness and safety practices, and the history/present state of the Leather subculture. Our group is open to folks of all genders, backgrounds, and levels of ability and experience. While Queer topics will be centered, people of all sexualities are welcome to respectfully participate.

Group meetings will be held in-person at the Capitol Hill branch of the Seattle Public Library. Remote participation via Zoom will also be available. Future book selections will be suggested and voted upon collaboratively; we seek to hear from a diversity of voices.

Please RSVP here

Our inaugural March meeting will discuss the book Unsafe Words: Queering Consent in the #MeToo Era.

Queer people may not have invented sex, but queers have long been pioneers in imagining new ways to have it. Yet their voices have been largely absent from the #MeToo conversation. What can queer people learn from the #MeToo conversation? And what can queer communities teach the rest of the world about ethical sex? This provocative book brings together academics, activists, artists, and sex workers to tackle challenging questions about sex, power, consent, and harm. While responding to the need for sex to be consensual and mutually pleasurable, these chapter authors resist the heteronormative assumptions, class norms, and racial privilege underlying much #MeToo discourse. The essays reveal the tools that queer communities themselves have developed to practice ethical sex—from the sex worker negotiating with her client to the gay man having anonymous sex in the back room. At the same time, they explore how queer communities might better prevent and respond to sexual violence without recourse to a police force that is frequently racist, homophobic, and transphobic.

This event is NOT sponsored by the Seattle Public Library

This class is a safe space for folks to ask all the questions they have – even those not necessarily “politically correct.” Attendees who are on their own gender exploration are also welcome to come and share their experiences and stories.

Some of the topics that may be covered include:

  • What do “transgender” and “cisgender” mean?
  • What’s the big deal if I misgender someone?
  • You misgendered someone; now what do you do?
  • What words do you use for body parts?
  • What do all those different letters mean? (FTM, MTF, AMAB, AFAB, etc.)
  • How to be an ally

Through education and the sharing of our stories, we will become a stronger community. Let’s bring a sense of celebration to this journey we are all learning about and learning from.
